La valle de vino: Mendoza

Cielos con sol, alergias malas y muchas fuentes. Sunny skies, bad allergies and many fountains.

Our Media Trip to Mendoza was part of our program, meaning Carolina was coming with us, a nice hotel, and planes. Oh, the luxurious ways of traveling.

We landed in the desert of Mendoza in early afternoon. It hardly ever has rain, which makes it perfect for growing the Malbec grapes. It was a clear day, but not refreshing. As soon as we got to the hotel, we already noticed problems with our allergies. The city has many trees to try and help the problem, but our city bodies just couldn't handle all the fall air.

After check-in and a rest, we went to the media conglomerate for a tour and meeting, Diario Uno. It is made up of a daily newspaper, an online version, a TV station and a radio station. We discussed the media climate in Mendoza, which is relatively free of the controlling government advertisements. It was the most zen building I have ever seen for a newsroom and very pretty. No KOMU cows and stench there.

We then went to the nearby Maza University which has a journalism program. They invited us because they wanted to learn more about Mizzou. They gave us vino wine and mini-cakes, and were enthralled to hear us talk about the Mizzou Method. When we walked around the tiny campus, every student's eyes were on us extranjeros foreigners.

The next morning we had a city tour of Mendoza, which consisted of a lot of plazas and fountains.

For a city with little water, why so many fountains? We never got this question answered.

We went to the second biggest park in South America, which happens to be a big party spot at night. Open containers? No problem. Public drinking? Go ahead. I know I sure would like to chill out at such a pretty place.

We also saw this giant church, that housed a famous religious depiction. The church gets tons of visitors, so they've built a hotel next to it. I had low expectations, but it was truly gorgeous and the church was massive.

The end of the day marked the end of our media tour, but we still had a few more days to spend in the wine valley.

Highlights:
-Eating calamari
-Giant, delicious hotel breakfast
-The Sheraton's sheets and fantastic bathtub
-Going to the hotel casino, gambling for my first time, and winning 8 pesos!
