El domingo en el parque con Jorge


It was a El domingo en el parque con Jorge Sunday in the park with George kind of day as we headed to los bosques de Palermo the Palermo forests.


We decided to go to El Rosedal the rose garden. NYT recommended it for their 36 hours in Buenos Aires.




The garden was absolutely gorgeous. The landscaping was impeccable, and there were trellises, fountains, benches, and of course, hundreds of roses.


We walked around, enjoying the brief escape from the land of concrete. Unfortunately we could not sit on the grass.

There was also a small lake with paddle boats. Though not sunny, it was a picturesque day (because it was extremely hot).



I will have to say, though quite beautiful, I am not sure if it compares to Portland's Rose Garden

We then continued to the Botanical Gardens...which weren't so Botanical. Guidebooks said it was full of stray cats and rather lame. Since I saw no flowers and not any plants worth mentioning, I'd have to agree. It was shady and relaxing though. Plus, the cats were too cute.

-Watching the Super Bowl with other Americans
- Getting our Super Bowl food fix - wings, brownies, and a locally brewed IPA (my first legal beer! Be proud Dad.)

Como Grecia

It's not often the word idílico idyllic is used in it's true sense. With Greek roots, the word is often used to described the Greek Isles.  Piriapolis in Uruguay is obviously a Greek name for this little beach town, and for good reason - it was idílico . We simply wanted to lay and soak in the sun. Busy, but not crowded, we manged to find a perfect spot on the beach.  We watched the white caps on the ocean, and admired the very Greek-like hill and houses in the distance. The water was warm, the waves were strong, and the smell of salt was all too inviting.  Piriapolis is a place to retire, and I honestly say I could.

Aire puro: Villa General Belgrano/La Cumbrecita

I shook Ashley awake at 8:00 am. "Get up, we are going hiking." I heard noise. I poked my head out onto our room's porch. Rain by the b uckets. "Never mind, go back to bed."  We slept on our bunks until the ripe old time of 10:30. Hiking was out of the picture, do to the lightening and downpour. So we decided to switch days around and head to Villa General Belgrano. As we waited for our two hour bus ride (it was supposed to be 1.5) Ashley made a friend. When she went back into the bus building, he sprinted after her. Look  at his loyalty! The bus ascended into the Sierras, and we found ourselves next to a mountain lake. If it was sunny, we would have skipped the town and gone swimming. It was absolutely beautiful, with a lot of people house boating. We then got into the adorable German town. Palacio Barolo

I feel like I belong in a Dr. Seuss book - from here to there to everywhere, trying to check everything off our lists before we leave. Must do: Palacio Barolo, former tallest building in Buenos Aires with intense symbolic and literary architecture. Dante's Inferno is the inspiration for how the building what constructed and how the statutes were carved. There's even free mason symbols. A Friday evening we showed up and began our visitada guiada tour with a dapper tour guide. Unlike other tours we have taken, this one was quite excellent. We started in the lobby of the building... After a classic elevator ride, we landed in the next ring of Dante's Inferno. We went up as high as the elevator would go and then climbed six flight of stairs to the first lookout. If I hadn't been in love with Argentina yet, this view sealed the deal. Up we went one more flight and saw some old typewriters from the building and peered out the little window
